Stand To End Rape (STER) Initiative is excited to announce the launch of a campaign to advocate for the inclusion of women in Nigeria’s political space. This campaign is more than just a call for representation; it is a powerful movement to amplify women’s voices in politics, fight gender inequality and build a future where women’s leadership is the norm and not the exception in Nigeria.
Women politicians play a pivotal role in shaping policies that address the unique challenges faced by women and girls. By advocating for laws that combat sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and promoting women’s economic empowerment, they ensure that women’s voices and experiences are represented in political discourse. Their leadership fosters decisions that create a more inclusive society. When women hold power, they build systems that not only safeguard and uplift women but also benefit entire communities.
Our campaign activities include:
- Stakeholder Advocacy: We are engaging key stakeholders, including lawmakers, community leaders and civil society organisations, to gather support and facilitate discussions around the importance of amplifying women’s participation in politics.
- Town Hall Meetings: We are organising town hall sessions in the 6 Geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Territory to educate citizens on the bill and gather feedback directly from the public.
- Community Engagements and Rallies: We are mobilising communities and supporters through grassroots outreach, interactive sessions and rallies to build local advocacy.
- Petition Signing: We are rallying public support through petitions to show that Nigerians stand united for women’s rightful place in governance.
- Documentary Storytelling: Through compelling documentaries, we will spotlight the remarkable achievements of female lawmakers and show their powerful impact on Nigeria’s political and social landscape.
- Media Campaigns: We will host engaging live sessions with experts, trailblazing female legislators and passionate advocates to highlight the importance of the reserved seat bill and mobilise public support.
The Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu opines that “In Nigeria, where women and girls constitute 49.32% of our population, representation in institutions and governance needs urgent attention.”
The Executive Director of Stand To End Rape (STER) Initiative, Ms. Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi contends that “Female lawmakers are vital in ending SGBV and advancing gender equality. Without the right people in power, we cannot create the policies and structures needed to protect women and ensure their voices are heard,”. “This isn’t just about politics; it is about giving women the power to change their lives and their communities.”
Stand To End Rape Initiative invites Nigerians, civil society organisations and allies to join hands in this campaign. As a unified group, we can make history by ensuring that women have a voice and a seat at the decision-making table and build the Nigeria of our dreams where every woman and girl is safe, empowered and valued.
