Co-Director
Dr. Mercy Kwabe is the Co-Director of Stand To End Rape Initiative (STER). Mercy has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to addressing the pressing issues of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Nigeria.
Mercy holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Nile University of Nigeria, where her thesis focused on sexual violence against children and law enforcement. This underscores her deep understanding of the complexities surrounding SGBV. Her extensive educational background, including an M.A. in Terrorism, International Crime and Global Security from Coventry University provides her with a comprehensive perspective on the intersection of violence, law and policy.
Mercy is a passionate advocate for women’s rights and a committed researcher. With a strong focus on policies that support gender equality, she works to empower women through advocacy and education. Dr. Kwabe believes that every woman deserves the opportunity to thrive and actively engage in initiatives that promote their rights and well-being. Recently, Mercy was invited by the Honorable Commission of Women’s Affairs in Cross River State to give a goodwill speech to women contesting for the local government elections. She has also been hosted severally on TV stations and Radio programs to speak on the realities and rights of women in Nigeria.
Mercy’s dedication to volunteerism and community engagement, particularly through her work with STER, has led to significant outcomes, such as policy changes that mandated the National House of Assembly to declare a state of emergency on sexual and domestic violence in Nigeria. Her leadership during awareness campaigns and outreach initiatives has made a tangible impact on the lives of many survivors and vulnerable populations.
In her role as Co-Director at STER, Mercy manages strategic partnerships with donors and stakeholders, oversees project management and drives fundraising initiatives. Her experience as a lecturer at Baze University, where she taught courses in Human Rights and Social Justice, further illustrates her ability to engage and educate diverse audiences on critical issues.
With her extensive experience in research, advocacy and academia, Mercy embodies the values and mission needed to engage in discourse on gender and women’s participation.
