In 2019, the UNiTE campaign marks the 16 Days of Activism with the theme ‘Orange the Worl: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape’. The campaign sets out to spread awareness of the realities lived and experienced by different women all over the world.
Daily, many people all over the world are subjected to acts of sexual violence. However, the response of various states and international society has been slow. The process of getting justice and providing care for the victims of rape has proven so hard to achieve over a short period of time. It is important to note that rape is rooted in a culture of power, dominance, and patriarchy. This is why many victims never used to and still don’t speak up. The fear of the aftermath, which is plagued with a lot of uncomfortable questions, judgments, blame game and stigmatization; is what many victims fear to face.
What we should aim for and work towards is a safe place where victims can speak up and feel safe, knowing very well that due process and adequate resources would be given to attain justice. That is why these 16 Days are very crucial. It a time carved out to spread awareness, demand justice for victims and to demand policy change and actions by both the domestic and international society.
However, individually we can act together. The fight against rape is not a fight for one gender but a fight for all. Use your voice, your actions, and your daily activities to speak up. Join the global fight against rape!!!
